Artwork

Ever since I have been drawing and painting, I have been drawn to the works of the surrealists. Magritte most of all, but also Ernst and Tanguy have always intrigued me both aesthetically and philosophically, a visual puzzle which is unique to the style. That being said, here is a quick list of some recent artwork with a brief statement about each work. I have some new work that I haven't had a chance to photograph, so hopefully that'll be up soon.

Flame (Looming Series #1)

Flame (Looming Series #1) Flame (Looming Series #1)

This is the first piece in a series exploring the idea that some looming threat of unavoidable natural disaster is inherent in most areas of the country. It will continue with "Flood", "Funnel", "Fault", and "Fury".

Path of Least Resistance

Path of Least Resistance Path of Least Resistance

I've always been fascinated by contours and I've often wondered what the wind would look like if we could visualize it somehow.

Intaglio 1

Intaglio 1 Intaglio 1

One of two Intaglio pieces dealing with the human tendency to appropriate elements from nature and repurpose them to fit our needs in order to insulate ourselves from the very same natural environment. I took these elements and reinserted them back to their original settings to illustrate how silly a human's version of the natural world really is.

A tattoo design for a friend, this is an ink drawing of a bristle cone pine tree, the oldest living organism on the planet.

Pipe Painting

Pipe Painting Pipe Painting

A semi-surreal still life of objects often utilized by the original surrealists. Mostly I wanted the challenge of painting a glass, as I've always viewed that as an interesting visual element of distortion.

Wild Things Pumpkin

Every Halloween I try to do an interesting pumpkin, this year I stepped back in to childhood and rendered a wild thing.

Nosferatu Pumpkin

Nosferatu Pumpkin Nosferatu Pumpkin

Another pumpkin, from the classic film Nosferatu, still a scary one if you haven't seen it.

Flame Painting

Flame Painting Flame Painting

A painting attempting to illustrate the Buddhist parable of the burning house, I don't think it works terribly well but I thought fire would be another interesting redering challenge.

Maple Box

Maple Box Maple Box

A small jewelry box I made out of quilted maple.

Bird Box

A pencil box made for a friend out of walnut, engraved and inked, I hope it's getting good use.
